G&H Sustainability installs biomass at Harrogate Grammar School

Harrogate Grammar School is now powered by biomass technology after a project to modernise its heating and hot water systems was completed by G&H Sustainability. The work saw us completely overhaul the school’s existing plant room, stripping out old gas fired boilers, water heaters, pumps and pipework. The old equipment was replaced with a fully automated 199kW biomass boiler system featuring a Building Management System for efficient control.

G&H Sustainability Director, Andrew Hudson, said: “We pre-fabricated the majority of the pipework within the plant room due to the time constraints of the project.

“This worked well because we were able to complete the on-site installation works in a much shorter time frame to enable the hot water and heating systems to be turned on when pupils returned from the holiday period.

“Biomass is an ideal sustainable fuel source for large scale premises such as schools because there’s room to install the equipment, it’s incredibly efficient to run and helps reduce fossil fuel usage.

“The work has revolutionised the way the school heats its premises and how hot water is generated.   It is a great investment that will work efficiently for the next 20 years.”

Site and Facilities Manager at Harrogate Grammar School, John Mungovin, said: “When the boilers in our 6th Form boiler house came to the end of their useful life, I looked at all the alternatives available.

“Eventually, having consulted SLCE who were the project managers, I decided to go down the biomass route with gas back-up boilers and all new pumps and pipework.

“After a rigorous tender process I was delighted to appoint G&H Sustainability to undertake the installation.

“The project went without any insurmountable hitches and the finished product is better than I could ever have imagined.

“Despite not being able to claim the RHI because the project was grant-funded, I am still convinced that I have provided the school with a robust and sustainable solution for heating and hot water for the next 20 years.

“G&H were at all times a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend their services.”
