G&H Building Services completes M&E design and build at 200-year-old mill transforming it into a class-leading sixth-form academy

G&H Building Services has completed its work transforming an 1800s Grade II listed mill and coach house into a state-of-the-art education facility.

The new post-16 Dixons Sixth Form Academy is on a neighbouring site to the flagship Dixons City Academy in Bradford.

G&H Building Services was appointed by the main contractor Kier to provide mechanical and electrical works to the existing Douglas Mill and coach house as well as a new-build sports hall.

Douglas Mill was previously used as an office by the NHS and was converted into a bespoke educational facility.

The project was delivered in two phases starting in Spring 2019 with the basement, ground and first floors completed in time for the start of the new academic year in September.

G&H Dixons 6FAPhase two, which completed this month, included additional classrooms, breakout areas, lecture theatre and an adjacent new-build sports hall all of which are powered by bespoke building services.

Mechanical services included plantroom equipment, ventilation, heating, cooling, water and gas services, above ground drainage, thermal insulation and a building management system.

The electrical work saw interior, exterior and emergency lighting, fire alarm, disabled refuge and toilet alarm, CCTV, access control, data, low voltage distribution, lift supply and small power installed.

The new sports hall includes changing rooms, storage and offices.

Both phases of the project finished ahead of schedule.
