G&H Building Services has been appointed to deliver all mechanical and electrical (M&E) works for Wakefield College as it brings an historic building back into use.

A yearlong renovation of the former Registry of Deeds Archive Building will see M&E services designed and installed to specifically aid learners with learning difficulties or disabilities, an alternative curriculum, apprentices, catering and hospitality.

Wakefield CollegeModern training kitchens and large rehearsal spaces will also be provided for students while the public will be able to access a new commercial training restaurant and café.

Appointed by the main contractor Galliford Try, G&H Building Services’ mechanical work includes above ground drainage, cold and hot water services, a low temperature hot water generation and distribution system, cooling to communications rooms, ventilation, heat recovery units and a building management system.

Internal, external and emergency lighting, small power, general power, containment systems, security detection, alarms, access control, CCTV, a disabled toilet alarm and refuge system will also be installed.

Senior Contracts Manager at G&H Building Services, Paul Cuss, said: “This is an exciting and challenging project requiring us to sympathetically transform the building by adding state-of-the-art technology while preserving an array of original features.

“Once complete, people using the facility will enjoy the latest M&E features specifically designed to provide the best environment for learning in the setting of an elegant, historic building full of character.

“We have great experience delivering schemes like this having worked on the University of Leeds’ School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies project where we preserved the legacy of the 1930s Grade II listed building when retrofitting modern-day building services.”
