Channel 4 to showcase G&H restoration scheme as part of RICS Awards

The regeneration of Leeds City College’s historic Printworks, which saw G&H Building Services design and build all M&E works, will be showcased on Channel 4 on 30 March at 8pm.

Hosted by Kevin McCloud, ‘Great British Buildings: Restoration of the Year’ explores the UK’s best renovation schemes of historic buildings for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards.

The second episode focuses on 19th century restoration and will include the project at the former Alf Cooke Printworks site in the Victorian category.

G&H Building Services worked on buildings 1B, 3, 4 and 5 with the main contractor, Sewell Construction.

The work in the Grade II-listed Printworks unlocked an unused facility for educational use while preserving the industrial character of the building.

G&H Building Services managed an M&E installation of key elements including an underfloor heating system, air conditioning, gas fired boiler plant room, heat recovery ventilation systems, radiators and radiant panels and specialist, feature lighting.

The work was widely praised for its clever use of colour throughout the building and the retention of original details, creating a modern yet welcoming ambience.

Senior Contracts Manager at G&H Building Services, Paul Cuss, said: “This was a very special project that required a great deal of skill to sympathetically introduce modern day building services while retaining the outstanding architectural features.

“We provided services to reflect the historical splendour of the Printworks while bringing it back into use by creating a world class teaching environment that will allow students and staff to thrive.

“Hopefully it will impress the RICS judges enough for it to be put through to the final shortlist for the ultimate accolade of Restoration of the Year.”

G&H Building Services is currently onsite providing full M&E design and build works in Building 1A – its fifth phase of the project.

More details about our work at the Printworks can be read in this case study.
